Why Pakistani students choose Italy

  • English-taught bachelor’s and master’s

Italy has one of the widest choices of English-taught programmes at public universities in Europe, including at bachelor’s level.

  • Fees based on family income

Public universities calculate tuition from your family’s income and assets, which keeps fees low for many Pakistani families.

  • Regional scholarships

Regional scholarship bodies award grants on family income. Depending on the region, they can include a fee waiver, a yearly grant, a room and meals.

  • Historic universities

The University of Bologna is often described as the oldest university in continuous operation, and many others date back centuries.

Requirements and documents

What a typical application and visa file needs. Exact requirements depend on the university and programme, and we prepare a checklist for each one.

Get my personal checklist
  1. Matric and Intermediate (or O/A-Level) results for a bachelor’s; bachelor’s transcripts and degree for a master’s
  2. An English test such as IELTS, or another proof of English the university accepts
  3. A declaration of value or CIMEA statement of comparability for your previous qualification, if the university asks for one
  4. Pre-enrolment on the Universitaly portal after admission
  5. Income and family documents for the regional scholarship, translated and legalised
  6. Proof of funds, accommodation details and health insurance for the visa

Tuition and scholarships

Set by family income at public universities. Living costs depend mainly on the city. These are the main funding routes:

  • Regional (DSU) scholarships

Awarded by each region on family income; can include a grant, fee waiver, room and meals.

  • University fee waivers and awards

Many universities reduce fees or offer merit awards to international students.

  • Italian government scholarships

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs runs scholarship calls for international students.

Studying in Italy: common questions

Something not covered here? Ask us on WhatsApp and we’ll answer it.

Can Pakistani students study in Italy in English?

Yes. Italian public universities offer many bachelor’s and master’s programmes taught entirely in English, so you do not need Italian to study. English-taught bachelor’s programmes are fewer than master’s, and many use an entrance test such as the SAT or CISIA’s CEnT-S. For a programme taught in Italian you need B2 Italian.

Is studying in Italy expensive?

It can be affordable. Public universities charge Pakistani students a fixed yearly fee, in 2026-27 from about €390 to €3,900 depending on the university, and most on our list charge under €1,200. Regional scholarships can remove the fee altogether. For the visa you show €10,179.85 for your living costs for the year.

Can I study in Italy after Intermediate?

Yes. Italy asks for 12 years of schooling, so Matric plus Intermediate (FSc, ICS, FA or I.Com) meets the basic rule, and three A-levels at grade E or above are accepted at Padua and Sapienza. Each university then adds its own entry requirements and any admission test. Matric alone is not enough.

What is the regional scholarship in Italy?

It is a needs-based scholarship run by each Italian region and awarded on family income and assets. It can include a yearly grant, a fee waiver, and in some regions a room and meals. In 2026-27 the top cash grant for a student living away from home is about €6,571 in Lazio and €8,246 in Padua. You must pass enough exams in the first year or repay it.

When should I apply to Italian universities?

For a September or October start, ideally from the autumn before. Many universities open applications in the winter and some close as early as February or March. For the 2027-28 intake the first calls are already open, some close in November and December 2026, and the last date for the student visa is 31 October 2027.
