Requirements and documents

What a typical application and visa file needs. Exact requirements depend on the university and programme, and we prepare a checklist for each one.

Get my personal checklist
  1. Bachelor’s transcripts and degree for a master’s; most bachelor’s routes need a foundation year or some university study first
  2. An English test such as IELTS for English-taught programmes, or a German certificate for German-taught ones
  3. A uni-assist evaluation for universities that use it
  4. A CV and motivation letter for each programme
  5. A blocked bank account to show living costs for the visa
  6. Health insurance and accommodation details for the visa appointment

Tuition and scholarships

No tuition at most public universities, only a semester contribution. Living costs depend mainly on the city. These are the main funding routes:

  • DAAD scholarships

The German Academic Exchange Service funds international students, mostly at master’s and doctoral level.

  • Deutschlandstipendium

A merit scholarship awarded by universities, open to international students already enrolled.

  • Foundation scholarships

German political and private foundations fund students with strong records in many fields.

Studying in Germany: common questions

Something not covered here? Ask us on WhatsApp and we’ll answer it.

Is studying in Germany free for Pakistani students?

At most public universities, yes: there is no tuition for bachelor’s or master’s degrees, only a semester contribution. Baden-Württemberg charges non-EU students €1,500 per semester, TUM charges new non-EU students more, and private universities charge full fees. For the visa you still show €11,904 for your first year, usually in a blocked account.

Can I study in Germany in English?

Yes, mainly at master’s level, where many programmes are taught fully in English. Most bachelor’s programmes are taught in German, and only 3.7% of undergraduate programmes are in English (HRK, winter semester 2025-26). If your programme is in English you do not need German for admission, though some German helps with daily life.

Can I go to Germany for a bachelor’s after Intermediate?

Usually not directly. Pakistan’s HSSC (FSc, ICS, FA, I.Com) does not give direct entry to a German university. Most students first complete a Studienkolleg, a German foundation course, or one year of university in Pakistan, and three good A-levels can give direct entry. We check the route for your results.

What is a blocked account?

It is a German bank account holding your first-year living costs, €11,904 a year or €992 a month, from which you withdraw a fixed sum each month once you arrive. You pay the money in before your visa appointment. It is the usual way to show funds for the student visa, and the money stays yours.

What is uni-assist?

uni-assist is a service about 180 German universities use to check international applications before they reach the university. It charges €75 for the first course and €30 for each further course in the same semester. Some universities, such as Stuttgart, run their own portals instead, and many Studienkolleg applications also go through uni-assist.

When should I apply to German universities?

For the October intake, start about a year ahead. The usual deadlines are 15 July for the winter semester and 15 January for summer, but many English-taught master’s close earlier, some as early as 1 March. Visa appointments can take time, so plan the blocked account and appointment as soon as you have an offer.
